This page explains what happens to your data when you use SpeakFlew (operated by SpeakFlew, speakflew.com). We've tried to avoid absolute claims (like “nothing ever leaves your browser”) unless they are literally true.
Microphone and audio
- We ask for microphone access only when you choose to speak. You can decline and use the typing path instead.
- Speech is turned into text by your browser's built-in speech recognition. In some browsers (notably Chrome and Edge) that recognition may be processed by the browser vendor's servers — that step is controlled by your browser, not by us.
- The optional record & replay feature keeps your recording in the browser tab for the current session only. It is not uploaded and is discarded when you leave. We never record silently.
- We do not upload raw microphone audio to our own servers.
Local processing and storage
Your transcript is analysed on your device. Your practice history, streak, preferences, selected goal and level, and saved exercises are stored in this browser using localStorage, sessionStorage and (for larger caches) IndexedDB. This data stays on your device, is not synced to any cloud, and is not tied to an account. You can clear it any time from Settings.
What leaves your browser
- Fonts: the Inter and Fraunces typefaces are served by Google Fonts via Next.js. Google may receive request information such as your IP address.
- Analytics: Google Analytics 4 (Google Consent Mode v2, IP anonymisation) and Vercel Web Analytics / Speed Insights (cookieless — no identifiers, no personal data). We send only page paths and aggregate event data — never raw audio, and never your transcript. In the EEA, UK and Switzerland, Google Analytics stores nothing until you consent via Google's message.
- Advertising: Google AdSense. Where you have consented — or outside the regions below — Google may set cookies or use device identifiers to serve and measure ads, including personalised ads. Where consent is denied, ads are non-personalised or withheld. Ads never appear on the active practice screen, and you can use every feature regardless. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
Consent
For visitors in the EEA, UK and Switzerland we use Google's Privacy & Messaging consent message — a Google-certified platform built on IAB Europe's Transparency & Consent Framework. It appears on your first visit; until you choose, Google Consent Mode keeps ad and analytics storage denied. Reopen it any time with “Privacy choices” in the footer. Outside these regions no message is shown. Vercel's cookieless analytics run in all regions without a prompt. Essential local storage always works so the site functions. See our Cookie Policy.
Retention
We keep local data until you clear it. Session recordings are discarded at the end of the session. Google Analytics data is retained per the property's configured retention window; ad-related data is governed by Google's Privacy Policy.
